What is a Life Script?

Life scripts are like secret game plans we made as kids without even realizing it:

– Secret Game Plan: We create scripts based on what we see and hear growing up, shaping how we act and feel as adults.

– Unconscious Blueprint: These scripts are hidden away in our subconscious, silently guiding our daily choices.

– Pattern Play: They form patterns—like always saying yes to everything because we think it’ll make people like us.

Example of how a script forms:

Scene 1

Scene 2

Analysis:

From a young age, John learns that being helpful and always saying “yes” is a way to earn approval and feel included in his family. This pattern becomes a habit, influencing his behaviour into adulthood, where he struggles to say “no,” even if it costs him personally. This illustrates the concept of “script” in transactional analysis, where early experiences significantly shape an individual’s behaviour patterns.

Life scripts can be rewritten once we spot them, making way for new, healthier habits!

How Life Script can be Helpful?

Script Loop - Insightful Counselling Singapore

Understanding your life script can be super helpful:

  • Aha Moments: Uncover why you do the things you do, like why you might shy away from taking charge at work.
  • Change the Channel: Once you spot these old scripts, you can change them. Imagine switching from a sitcom rerun to your favorite new show!
  • Boost Your Happiness: Changing outdated scripts means you get to write a happier, healthier life story.

Continuing with the same example:

Scene 3

Analysis:

Yep, that old “don’t say so, say yes” script is still playing in John’s adult life! John is still operating from his past childhood experiences, immediately agreeing to take on more responsibilities to please their manager. This response, driven by a need for approval, overlooks personal boundaries and workload capacity, which can lead to stress and burnout.

After the script analysis, John might benefit from responding more from the Adult ego-state, which involves realistic assessment and communication of personal limits.

By recognizing this sneaky script, you can switch it up—maybe swap immediate Ýes’ to giving themselves time to contemplate on their workload. Therapy may be needed to help make this change. Who knows, the new script might just be John’s ticket to becoming happier and relaxed.

What you once decided can be redecided

  • The idea that “what you once decided can be redecided” is a powerful reminder from the world of Transactional Analysis.
  • What you once directed can be redirected.
  • We’re not stuck with the life scripts we adopted in childhood.
  • As adults, all of us have the ability to reflect on these unconscious decisions and make new choices that better serve our current goals and well-being. This flexibility allows for significant personal growth and change, empowering us to live more fulfilling lives.

Testimonials

Reena has been my clinical supervisor since I graduated from a counselling master programme. She is patient and attentive. She makes me feel comfortable and less worry. Her counselling and supervision skills and knowledge are much to be admired for and she is generous with her knowledge. I left her office feeling fulfilled every time after the session. She is a extraordinary supervisor.

Reena is one of the best supervisors I had. She is very knowledgeable, passionate and compassionate individual who cares about imparting her skills on junior counsellors. She is well- versed in EMDR therapy and has taught me some valuable techniques to use with clients. Highly recommended if you are looking for a clinical supervisor.

I have had the privilege to experience Reena as both my Group Supervisor during my Masters at ECTA and one-on-one for individual supervision.

As a Group Supervisor, Reena allows the group to set our supervision goals. She is conscious when allowing sufficient time for cases to be presented. With her rich experience, she gently teases out info of each case, urges each presenter to provide his view, intervention and treatment plans.

As a Counsellor, I have benefited richly from Reena’s experience, generous sharing and guidance. I am truly grateful to be mentored and supervised by her.

Thank you for your excellent supervision. I am amazed at your generosity, patience, kindness, diligence, inspiration, commitment and support that you have provided during my internship counselling journey. You make me realize that I have more ability than I think I have, challenged me, pushed me, believed in me, help me grow consistently and constructively to do better and led by example. Thank you again!
