Longer term reactions include unpredictable emotions, flashbacks, strained relationships and even physical symptoms like headaches or nausea.

What is Trauma Counselling?

Trauma counselling is a specialized field of therapy that addresses the emotional and psychological aftermath of traumatic experiences. It employs a range of tools and techniques to help individuals process the trauma, alleviate distressing symptoms, and restore a sense of safety and control. This form of counselling is designed to not only assist those who have directly experienced trauma but also those indirectly affected. Type of Traumas

Trauma can be categorized into several types, each with its unique characteristics and impacts. The most common type is physical trauma, which refers to injuries sustained to the body through accidents, falls, or violence. Psychological trauma, on the other hand, involves emotional distress caused by deeply distressing or disturbing experiences such as abuse, neglect or loss. Secondary trauma is experienced by those who are close to someone who has been through a traumatic event. There is also developmental trauma, which occurs during childhood and can have long-term effects on a person’s growth and development. Each type of trauma requires appropriate intervention and treatment to mitigate its effects and promote recovery.

What is EMDR Therapy?

An excellent treatment for trauma is EMDR therapy and involves harnessing the brain’s healing power. This power is used for reprocessing past painful experiences in a safer and controlled therapeutic environment. A therapist uses bilateral brain stimulation to help you process your thinking, feelings and behaviour related to the past disturbing memory or event. Technically, EMDR therapy mimics Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. REM sleep is said to have the power to process daily events and slot them in our memory network. However, when something is overwhelming happening, REM is unable to process. It is left unprocessed like an island memory.

EMDR therapy is advised to be facilitated only by EMDR trained clinicians. Therefore, please ensure your clinician is EMDR trained.

When in a therapeutic environment, you feel safer to relive and reprocess trauma, and you’re able to re-channel any negative energy into optimism. Eventually, past trauma starts feeling less punitive and intimidating. EMDR is conclusive and incredibly effective in treating trauma that generates most forms of anxiety, including panic attacks and PTSD.

Brainspotting is a revolutionary new therapy for a rapid and effective therapeutic approach to healing clients who experience traumatic events and/or PTSD. David Grand discovered this therapy in 2003.

Brainspotting uses the natural cues from the body and brain for self-healing to take place.

BSP is brain-based therapy. Brainspotting a recent phenomenon where the treatment gets direct access to the brain. It works with the client’s brain to locate trauma spots or trauma capsules. Dr Grand stated that Brainspotting harnessed the brain’s natural ability to self-scan, and in turn, find, activate and heal the sources of emotional trauma and distress in the body.
